When the war broke out in August, 1914 the 1st Seaforth Highlanders battalion was in India as part of the Dehra Dun Brigade, 7th (Meerut) Division of the Indian Army which straight away, was despatched to Europe. The division landed at Marseilles on 12th October and began to move north to the trenches. 1st Seaforth Highlanders reached Merville on 28th October and two days later occupied trenches along the Estaires – La Bassée road at Neuve Chapelle, where they remained, often under heavy shell fire until relieved on 13th November. On 10th November when the battalion moved back 100 yards to allow the artillery to bombard the enemy positions opposite right up to the British trenches, three men, including Robert Castle, were killed by shellfire.
